Ep. 4 — Lydia's Translation of "Mi Religión" by Miguel de Unamuno

In episode 4, due to technical difficulties with the intended episode for this week, this bilingual fill-in episode features Lydia reading her English translation of the essay “Mi Religión” by the acclaimed Spanish author and Generation ‘98 fellow Miguel de Unamuno, followed by a reading of the original Spanish.

This philosophical essay is Unamuno’s response to the question “What is your religion?” and to all those who ask such questions, arguing that the purpose is more often than not to be able to label and categorize a person out of the desire to remain in a state of what he calls “spiritual laziness". So, this really philosophical and rather heavy essay explores what it means to Unamuno to have a religion in general and his position on his personal beliefs and why he rejected giving anyone a straight answer or claiming any one denomination.

So, what do you think about the idea of having a clear-cut position on “religion” (or lack thereof)? Can anyone really have a clear-cut position on religion? Is it even that simple? How do you feel when someone asks what your religion is? Do you have a simple response ready or do you find it a bit more difficult to put into words? Do you appreciate the question or resent it? Do you feel sure or unsure of your position on religion or spirituality? Let us know in the comments, as well as any other thoughts or feedback you may have about the translation, my reading, the essay itself, etc. We want to hear your feedback and would love for you to join our discussion!
